How to Upload a Studio 5000 Logix Designer Project from a Logix 5000 Controller

In the last part of the series, we learned how to download a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project to a Logix 5000 Controller. In this part of the series, we’ll learn how to upload a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project from a Logix 5000 controller.

Occasionally, you will be required to maintain or troubleshoot a Logix 5000 system for which you don’t have the Studio 5000 Logix Designer project. In cases like these, you can upload the Studio 5000 Logix Designer project from the controller. When you upload a project from a Logix 5000 project, you are copying the project from the controller’s memory to your local computer’s hard drive.

Previously, a project uploaded from a Logix 5000 controller did not include documentation for the project like rung comments, comment descriptions, and extended tag properties. This documentation only existed in the offline project and was unavailable if the original project was not available.

Since version 21 of Studio 5000 Logix Designer, developers have the option to download the project documentation to the controller when they download the project to a Logix 5000 controller. If you upload a project from a Logix 5000 controller, where the project documentation was originally downloaded, then all of the project documentation is uploaded with the project.

To upload a project from a Logix 5000 controller, a communications path must be established as discussed in the previous part of the series.

To download the project to the controller, click Communications > Upload.

The Connected to Upload window appears. In this window, you can review the differences between the online and offline projects. When you are ready to upload the project from the controller, click Upload.

If your offline project has unsaved changes, you will be prompted to save the project before uploading. Click Yes to save your offline changes.

The Studio 5000 Logix Designer project is uploaded from the Logix 5000 controller. Once the upload is complete, Studio 5000 Logix Designer automatically goes online with the controller. If you want, select Go Offline to go offline and continue editing the Studio 5000 Logix Designer project offline.
