Learn Logix Part 4.7. In this part of the series, we’ll learn how to download a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project to a Logix 5000 controller.

Learn Logix is a series of articles designed to teach you everything you need to know to work with Rockwell Automation’s Studio 5000 Logix Designer and the Logix 5000 series of PLCs.

In the last part of the series, we learned how to establish a communication path between a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project and a Logix 5000 controller using RSWho. In this part of the series, we’ll learn how to download a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project to a Logix 5000 controller.

After updating or creating a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project, you need to transfer the project file from your computer to the Logix 5000 controller. The process of transferring a project from a computer to a controller is called downloading to the controller.

It’s important to know that a controller can only contain one project at a time. When you download a project to a controller, you overwrite the project that is currently loaded in the controller.

You can only download a project to a controller when the controller is in the Program or Remote Program operating mode. You can also initiate a download when the controller is in Remote Run mode, but Studio 5000 Logix Designer automatically puts the controller in Remote Program mode before the download actually occurs.

Downloading Project Documentation

Choose to Download Project Documentation and Extended Properties

You can view and customize the information to be downloaded to a controller in the Controller Properties dialog of the Studio 5000 Logix Designer project.

In this dialog box, you can see the name and path on the local computer of the project to be downloaded to the controller.

You can also choose to enable the Download Project Documentation and Extended Properties option. By enabling this option, you are choosing to download the comments and descriptive information from the project to the controller. Since the documentation is stored on the controller, it can be uploaded by another user for easier troubleshooting and maintenance of the system.

It is recommended that you leave this option enabled for all of your projects.
