How To Create a Communication Path in Studio 5000 Logix Designer

Learn Logix Part 4.6. In this part of the series, we’ll learn how to configure a communication path between a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project and a Logix 5000 controller.

In the last part of the series, we learned about the different operating modes of Logix 5000 controllers and functions are performed in each mode. In this part of the series, we’ll learn how to configure a communication path between a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project and a Logix 5000 controller. A valid communication path is required to upload, download, or go online with a Logix 5000 controller through Studio 5000 Logix Designer.

To connect to a Logix 5000 controller through the Studio 5000 Logix Designer application, you need to define a communication path from the application to the controller. This is the path that is used to exchange information between the controller and the application for uploading, downloading, and going online with a Logix 5000 controller.

When using an Ethernet communication driver with a ControlLogix system, the communication path may look like the one shown above where information flows through;

  • The Ethernet Devices or Ethernet/IP communications driver
  • The communications module
  • The backplane
  • The controller

When using a USB communication driver, the communication path is simplified and information flows from the USB communications driver to the controller and vice versa.

Setting the Communication Path

The active communication path can be seen in an open Studio 5000 Logix Designer project.

To set the communication path of a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project, you can click the RSWho button, located to the right of the communication path display.

When you click the RSWho button, the Who Active dialog opens. In this dialog, you can browse the configured RSLinx Classic communication drivers and select the controller that you want to communicate with.

Note that for a Studio 5000 Logix Designer project to communicate with a controller, the controller type, firmware version, and slot number must match with the physical Logix 5000 system. This is a safety feature to prevent a user from accidentally downloading to the wrong controller.
